In the current economic system, more and more natural resources are becoming commercial items monopolised by multinational companies. In a hypothetical future, with the increasing levels of air pollution, fresh air could become a lucrative commodity.

My current design work develops around hypothetical containers for commercialised fresh air that people would carry around to satisfy their needs. As so, these containers would be an additional artefact to the human outfit.

The idea for this project emerged from one of my main lines of enquiry, which is the transient state of materials, since I believe that objects come to life through their process of change, evolution and interaction. This quest has compelled me to challenge the ‘when, how and where’ the material transformations take place in order to manufacture movement and transition. My design process relies in the use of a variety of material combinations and emerging digital technologies together with hand fabrication and crafting in order to materialize the life within apparently inert matter.

reflecting about my concept and motivations

Once I got the confidence from working in small scale, I started working in a larger scale. Bold pieces, simple connections and a strong statement. I don't want to restrain myself by trying to make nice/pretty pieces, I am more interested in the realities my pieces tell. I see the beauty in those realities around us, the man-made world we have chosen to have. Let's just don't use it and dispose of it. Let's try to appreciate it more, make the most of it.

Some snapshots of my air containers. Trying to make the mundane precious without make up or unnecessary accessories. Recently, I went to a talk given by Giovanni Corvaja. He has spent years and years of his life working with gold wire, taking it to the extreme. Amazing skills and dedication. He said he has culminated all those years with a golden cloth. He mentioned that he has devoted so many years of his life to gold for being such a pure and nonperishable/eternal material. I work with plastics and man-made materials. Many man-made materials are non perishable - and in fact that is causing a problem nowadays. So who says that plastics cannot deserve the same treatment?

Silvia Weidenbach talk at GSA

Silvia Weidenbach gave a talk at GSA which I had the opportunity to go. I didn't know much about her work beforehand. I first heard about her in Liesbeth den Besten book On Jewellery, in a section about crossing boundaries in jewellery. Silvia is an amazing speaker, her talk seemed to be more about having a conversation than giving a talk. She explained how she went from a pure craft background into the world of digital, which seems to be her passion now. I found her talk really inspiring since we share the same attraction for incorporating the digital into the craft making.

It is about time to get all the bits and bobs together and finalize designs. The different items that seemed disconnected at the start, begin to find its place and reason to be in the puzzle.
