the searching / the finding

I have come across these interesting paragraphs about 'the searching'/ 'the finding' I feel very identified with! For those who get lost in the searching - like me - sometimes, some useful read:

 Invest – Ela Bauer

There is no need to define yourself every time, let the work tell your story, whatever it is.
It’s great that you make so many discoveries, that is a great richness, but at the same time I think that it would be great if you stuck a bit longer to something you made / discovered. Why won’t you hold on a little bit longer to some work you make and see what more you can discover? Or combine your materials with some unexpected ones? Or treat them differently than usual? I know that you do all those things, but to get deeper into something you really have to give things some time. Invest much more time into the process.

“What should I possibly have to tell you, oh venerable one? Perhaps that you’re searching far too much? That in all that searching, you don’t find the time for finding?”

about contemporary jewellery

I have come across an interesting view from Maria-Jose Van Den Hout about what is contemporary jewellery:

"I tell them that these artists studied at an art academy and that it is as important a discipline as painting and sculpture. I also show them what, in my view, is the artistic value of each piece. Wearability is an important issue for me; whether it is comfortable to wear the pieces or not is not important. And I tell them about my 3 H's: Head, Hand and Heart. These three should be in balance. Too much head would make the piece only intellectual, conceptual if you like; too much hand would make it just technical and nice; and too much heart would make it sentimental."

I like her view on how there should be a balance between the art, craft and sentimental aspects in jewellery making. In the last two years, I have been questioning myself about where can I place what I do, design? craft? art? and I think I really need the head in what I do, and probably following the head is the heart.

New Designers 2016

An amazing week in New Designers in London. Such a nice atmosphere! I met great people!

I was a bit skeptical about how my work would be received in the fair: conceptual, low value materials, simple and dark… Not quite craft, not quite design, not quite art… I was utterly delighted to see a lot of interest especially from young people who stopped to look, to read, to touch…

I think I managed to transmit my message and I believe many people feel the same attraction as me for simple gestures taken from the man-made world. Such a rewarding feeling!! Definitively was worth it!!!
